Madagascar hissing cockroaches (*Gromphadorhina portentosa*) are one of the largest cockroach species, growing up to 2–3 inches long. Native to Madagascar, they thrive in decaying logs and are known for their distinctive hissing sound, which they produce by expelling air through specialized respiratory openings. Unlike most cockroaches, they are wingless but excellent climbers. Their hissing serves multiple purposes, including defense, mating, and dominance displays. They are often kept as pets due to their docile nature and ease of care.
